Entire province preparing to resume normal economic life
With the restoration of peaceful conditions in all major towns and the country-
In Dacca yesterday (Wednesday) the mood was one of marked relaxation with distinctly greater activity in the city's shopping centres than was seen in the past few days. In old Dacca city and other areas more than fifty per cent shops were open yesterday. The people freely moved about on the streets and vehicular traffic was back on the road in all its variety. Both public and private buses carried full loads of passengers and taxis and rickshaws also had a busy day.
While the water supply position in Dacca city is now completely satisfactory, electricity has been restored in most areas of the city and in the remaining areas power is expected to be restored soon.
Public welfare institutions including hospitals and Government dispensaries in Dacca and other towns have reopened as doctors and other medical staff reported for duty. Among those are two major hospitals of Dacca. The sanitary staff in the city is also back to work and so are the traffic police. Attendance in Government offices showed further improvement yesterday.
Two more dailies resumed publication yesterday. They are the Bangla daily Azad and the Urdu daily Vatan. As already reported four other leading dailies of East Pakistan namely, the Morning News, the Pakistan Observer, Banik Pakistan and Purbo Desh resumed publications earlier.
