New baggage rules from today

Islamabad, May 14: the New Passengers Baggage Rules, promulgated recently by the Central Government for passengers and tourists arriving from foreign countries other than India, will be effective from tomorrow (May 15).

These rules specify the goods for passengers and tourists separately which can be imported as passengers baggage without payment of customs duties whereas the baggage rules for the passengers have been made more stringent. The baggage rules for the tourists coming into Pakistan have been modified for the first time.

Under the old baggage rules for passengers the household articles like refrigerators and air-conditioners could be informed customs duties under the new rules. These articles when imported as baggage will be subject to customs-duties. Such articles up to the value of Rs. 1,000/- can now only be imported on payment of customs-duties but without production of import permit provided the passenger has stayed abroad for ever three months.

The New Passengers Baggage Rules, it may be mentioned, have been notified in the Gazette of Pakistan (extraordinary) of April 27, 1971.
