A.K.Brohi to defend Sk. Mujib

Rawalpindi Aug. 20 (APP): At his first appearance before the special military court on August 11, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman presented a list of three names of lawyers for his defence in order of preference, it was officially stated today.

The first name was that of Mr. A.K. Brohi, in compliance with the undertaking given by the president that the Sheikh would be defended by a Pakistani counsel of his own choice.

The law Ministry approached Mr. Brohi for the purpose, who expressed unwillingness at first on account of his heavy commitments to other important clients. Mr. Brohi is one of the most eminent counsel in Pakistan and enjoys international standing as a lawyer.

The Government being anxious that the Sheikh Mujibur should have the best legal assistance available in Pakistan, have pressed him to accept the brief in the interests of justice and fair play.

The Government is glad to announce that Mr. Brohi has agreed to make the necessary sacrifice as a matter of public and professional duty.

Mr. Brohi left Karachi this evening for his first meeting with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Jamaat upholds action to crush armed rebellion

Lahore, Aug. 20 (PPI): The action taken by the Government of Pakistan to crush the armed rebellion in East Pakistan by the outlawed Awami League in connection with Indian warlords and their agent has been fully upheld by the central council of the Jamaat-i-Islami which went into session for the third consecutive day here today under the  presidentship of the Deputy chief of the party Maulana Abdur Rahim.

The meeting which was also attended by the party's founder Maulana Syed Abdul Ala Maudoodi unanimously adopted a resolution after considering the issue in all its details and said the Governments action had become inevitable in view of its responsibilities towards preserving national integrity and solidarity.

The resolution said the outlawed party had entered into a conspiracy with certain foreign powers for bringing about the secession of the East Wing of the country and had given a blood-bath to the non-Bengali population there. The rebels not only put to sword the civil and military officials of the Government but also mercilessly massacred helpless women and innocent children.

In view of these facts the resolutions said central council had hoped that big powers and other civilised Governments of the world would have denounced in clear terms this rebellion and the consequent large scale massacre within the boundaries of a duly recognised country.

It was hoped that they would use their offices for curbing the rebels and the powers patting them on the back unfortunately, however, certain powers failed in their duty in this hour of trial and actually fell under the influence of highly mischievous and misleading Indian propaganda.

They were now trying to interfere in the internal affairs of a sovereign state by preaching a political solution of the whole issue. These powers openly held the brief for those rebels who were carrying on the Bangla Desh propaganda from soil of a hostile country.

This said posture was regarded by the central council as something undermining world peace and dealing a moral blow to the committee of a nation.

The resolution said while it is within the rights of a state to curb rebellions these postures had surprisingly enough challenged this right only in the case of Pakistan and had never adapted this attitude towards rebellion within their own territories and the bid to bring pressure to bear on Pakistan in a matter which was within her sovereign rights was an insult to Pakistan.

She could never being treated on the cononial level, it added.

In this context the council considered the statement on behalf of the UN Secretary General U Thant as a bid to overstep the limits of his authority. The Statement had greatly damaged his position and status of neutrality as the Secretary General of the world organisation, it said.

The resolution also condemned the anti-Pakistan propaganda in which the British press and Radio had been indulging in the recent past to the Indian line.

The Central Council urged the Government of Pakistan to ignore totally all political pressure exercised by foreign powers in this matter and go ahead undaunted with the necessary measures for curbing the rebels and preserving the geographical and ideological boundaries of the state.

Jamaat urges all-out preparations for Jehad

Lahore, Aug. 20 (APP): The Central Council of the Jamaat-e-Islami yesterday called for all out-preparations for Jehad in view of India's continued hostilities and  provocations.

A resolution passed at the second day session of the Council yesterday said that the spirit of Jehad which is one of the main characteristics of the Muslims, must be sustained to keep the country integrated.

The resolution condemned the Indian attempt to disintegrate Pakistan and jeopardise her independence.

India, by sending armed infiltrators into East Pakistan, had openly contravened the international law and conventions in complete disregard of moral and human values, the resolution added.

The resolution also condemned the Indo-Soviet treaty signed recently in Delhi and  said that the treaty had further escalated the Indian hostilities.

The Indian rulers first got an Indian airliner "hijacked" through her own agents and then by putting blame for it on Pakistan banned flights of Pakistani planes over her territory, This was a part on Indian plan to disintegrate Pakistan, the resolution said. It added that such conspiracies by India were still going on and by setting up so-called refugees camps she was not only receiving foreign aid but also making it ground for her false propaganda against Pakistan.

The resolution warned the Indian rulers that if they did not change her present attitude the Pakistani masses and armed forces could meet their aggression in the same manner.

The Pakistan Peace and Welfare Council will observe the "Defence of Pakistan Day" on September 6 with a public meeting at Paltan Maidan to be presided over by Moulvi Farid and addressed by by Maulana Muhammad Nuruzzaman Khan and Mr. Asghar Hossain, former speaker of East Pakistan Assembly, reports APP.

Pakistan should stop taking foreign aid, says Daultana

Karachi, Aug. 20 (APP): Mian Mumtaz Mohammad Khan Daultana president of the council Mulsim League said here on Wednesday night that Pakistan should stop taking aid from foreign countries and make concerted efforts to stand on its own feet.

Addressing his party workers at Golimar he said that it was essential for the country's existence, sovereignty, dignity and honour in the comity of nations.

He said he fully agreed with president Yahya Khan when he (The president) said that no aid would be acceptable to Pakistan which curtailed its Sovereignty. He said he wanted to go one step forward that Pakistan should stop receiving foreign aid altogether. The foreign aid he added was only in name. It was Just like opium.

Mian Daultana said that without aid Pakistan was achieved and its economy was best during the period from 1947 to 1953. It was the period during which no aid was taken from any source.

He said the people who made their fortunes because of Pakistan should now come forward and help the country to stand on it own feet.

Mian Daultana criticised the Chairman for the Aid-to-Pakistan consortium Mr. 1.P.M. Agril for writing a biased report recently on the country's economy.

Islamic Ideology

Mian Mumtaz Mohammad Khan Daultana urged the people to revive the spirit and the basis on which this homeland of Muslims was achieved 24 years ago.

He told his party workers that the basis was the ideology of Islam on which the Muslim League united the Muslims of the Indo Pak sub-continent and carved the Islamic State.

Mian Daultana said that Pakistan was passing through a period of trial. The main problem at this juncture was not that of provincial autonomy or constitution or the enemy across the border but it was the problem of country's integrity and solidarity.

Pakistan he added was achieved on the basis of Islamic ideology and it would continue to exist only on that basis. The day when the concept of Islamic unity was removed Pakistan would be disintegrated. It was therefore necessary that the people should understand the problem clearly and redouble their efforts to achieve Islamic unity he added.

British MP impressed with vigilance of Pak Army in East Wing

Rawalpindi, Aug. 20 (APP): The visiting British parliamentarian, Mr. John Wilkinson, said here yesterday that he was most impressed that with the vigilance which the Pakistan Army was maintaining on the front line in East Pakistan.

In a Radio interview broadcast last night Mr. Wilkinson said that he and his other member of the team had only a relatively short time in East Pakistan, two days and in that it was not possible to do what they wanted. But they did go up to the front line to the frontier which the Pakistan Army was holding and had seen the vigilance they had to maintain at such time, in the situation.

He said he was assured by the Army that they were getting on top of the situation. The difficulty, he said, "has always been I think, the element of infiltration from across the border and this is the key to the whole situation.

Mr. Wilkinson said that he had been to the reception centres between Benapole and Jessore and added, it was most encouraging to see what practical steps were being taken to homeland and it did highlight the faithful desire on the part of the Government of Pakistan for such endeavours to welcome its citizens back to Pakistan but the physical obstacles must be overcome.

He said, "We felt that it was most important that the refugees now in India should be allowed to come home because Pakistan or president Yahya had said openly and declared it many a time that it welcomes back and amnesty is being declared.

Provisions have been made. Reception centres opened and so on for their reception and return. So really the key issue is the attitude of India, he added.

Mr. Wilkinson said, "If anything can be done to encourage India to facilitate the return of refugees. I would welcome, I have said so in the house of commons before this visit to Pakistan that I would welcome it very much, if India would reciprocal welcome gesture by your Government.

"If she did so as well, I think this will be a great step towards the encouragement of the return of displaced persons."

Replying to a question, how the international community I think must first try to persuade politicians in India who are trying to make return of refugees difficult.

"This is on political level and secondly on financial level as I have said throughout the summer that an effective aid programme to Pakistan must be maintained and if this is done the obviously then  there would be financial base to boost the economy in East Pakistan and make the rehabilitation of refugees so much easier."

Daultana not to contest for United ML president

Hyderabad, Aug. 20 (APP): Mian Mumtaz Mohammad Khan Daultana president of the Pakistan Council Muslim League announced today that he would not be a candidate for presidentship of the United Muslim League.

He was addressing the party workers at Kandiyari in Tharparkar district about seventy miles from here this afternoon. He said that Pakistan was passing through the most crucial period of its history and it was the pressing demand of the time that all Islam loving parties should join hands to safeguard the territorial integrity and solidarity of Pakistan.

The Council Muslim League chief said to demand transfer of power at this moment was not in the interest of the country and was a great disservice to Pakistan as our borders are facing the war threats from hostile India which would lose no chance to undo Pakistan.

Mian Saheb assured the party workers that there would be no hindrance on their behalf in the way of League merger and we shall do everything possible to see a united and strong Muslim League.

ML factions to be united in 12 days

Lahore, Aug. 20 (APP): The merger of the three Muslim League will take place in about ten to 12 days, Mr. Ghulam Mohammad. Khan Lundkhawar, General secretary of the Sarhad Muslim League (Qaiyum Group) said here today.

Addressing a press conference he said the most suitable man from West Pakistan would be elected as president of the United Muslim League. The United Muslims League would comprise all the three factions of Muslim League that is, convention, council and Pakistan Muslim like Mr. Fazal-Ul-Quader Choudhury and Malik Mohammad Qasim might not join for their personal reasons, he added.

In the NWFP he said the merger had already taken place. Mr. Lundkhawar also said whatever little time was consumed in reaching the final decision regarding the merger was due to the fact that Malik Qasim; General Secretary of the convention Muslim League had been trying to wriggle out of the decision that final merger would take place at a meeting of the Council Muslim League.

He said Malik Qasim agreed in principle and then after two hours said that the final decision would be taken only after the councils of all the three Muslim League had met.

He said in spite of the difficulties the stage was now set for the merger of the three Muslim Leagues and hoped that The United Muslim League would be able to discharge its national duties as an organisation which brought Pakistan into being.

He said Mr. Wali Khan's pretension that he had gone out of the country for an eye operation was a hoax as he remained in Kabul for over a month which was no place for the cure of eyes.

He said an enquiry into what he had said in Kabul should be held by the Government and suitable action taken against him and his associates in the bureaucracy.
