Mr. Afazuddin Fakir, a former MNA, yesterday demanded immediate lifting of martial law and handling over power to the majority party in the country, reports ENA.
In a statement issued in Dacca he said that following withdrawal of Martial Law and transfer of power to the elected representatives of the people. The majority party might introduce an interim constitution for running the administration.
He said an interim constitution would not create problem in the way of smooth running of the Govt. This method has already been tested in the country as Govts prior to 1956 were run with an interim constitution, he added.
Mr. Afazuddin Fakir said that if there was any delay in transfer of power to the elected representatives of the people, then the situation might take a very serious form threatening the very existence of the country. He hoped that good sense would prevail upon "the authorities concerned" and the political leaders in solving the existing political and constitutional deadlock in the country.
Criticising some of the West Pakistan leaders representing the vested interests in the country, he said that " they are not following a political or moral code of conduct necessary for an honest and clean politics". He said it was the time for them to read the writings on the wall and accept the legitimate demands of the people particularly of East Pakistan who had been the most oppressed and exploited during the last 23 years.

The Dacca Share Market was quiet to easy yesterday (Wednesday), values moved either way in a narrow range. More signs were in the minus group and less in the plus forward section was quiet. No business was officially reported.
In the Forward Section Adamjee Jute lost Rs. 1.33 at Rs. 7.67 Karnaphuli Paper was Rs. 1,75 lower at Rs. 10.60 Pak Tobacco was lower by 46 paisas at Rs. 16.84 ESSO Pak erlyer was 67 paisas better at Rs. 11,45. Bonus voucher was steady. Ready finished 50 paisas better at Rs. 1035 : 25 forward concluded the session Rs. 2 higher at 195.00.

The General Secretary of Awami Ulema Party, Moulvi Mohammad Shahjahan, yesterday appealed to the president to accept all the points of the speech given by Mujib on Sunday last for saving the country from total devastation, reports APP.
In a statement the Ulema Party leader said all the points of Mujib's speech at the Ramna Race Course maidan were fully justified. The Awami League chief echoed the feelings of the seventy million people of Bangla Desh, Moulavi Shahjahan said.
Mr. Joynal Abedin Chowdhury, G.S. of Bengal Teacher's Association (formal EPTA) in a press statement yesterday called upon the teachers all over Bangladesh to take active part in the current mass movement.
He directed the units of the Association to form Mukti Bhahini throughout Bangladesh in cooperation with local people of the respective places. He also urged units to always keep in touch with their higher units of the teachers Association. Meanwhile, the president and G.S. of the East Pakistan Secondary School Teacher Samity, Kazi Abdul Mannan and Mr. Bazlur Rahman, in a press statement yesterday called upon the members of the Samity to prepare themselves for the struggle for emancipation and freedom of Bangladesh in response to the programme announced by Mujib.
The leaders of the Samity also urged the district units to postpone their ensuing conference in view of the present situation of Bangladesh.

Mr. Tara Mia of Rahman Trading company handed over a sum of Rs. 10,000 to Mujib as donation to the Awami League relief fund.

Black flags have been flying on the police stations and residential premises of police officials, like those on private and public buildings, in different parts of Bangladesh for the last few days to mourn those who had laid down lives for common case, reports PPI.

Air Marshal Asghar Khan (Retd), chief of the Gono Oykya Andolon said in Dacca yesterday that it was time for West Pakistani people to join their East Pakistani brethren in their struggle for restoration of democracy and thus overcoming the present crisis.
Talking to PPI, the Air Marshal said that the only way left for president Yahya Khan is to come to East Pakistan and fulfil the demands made by Awami League chief Sheikh Mujib.
Making a strong plea for withdrawal of martial law he said that he was going to West Pakistan to tell the people there about what had been happening in the East Pakistan. He expressed the hope that once West Pakistanis came to know what is happening here, they would not be failing in contributing towards the restoration of democracy.
The GOA chief said that everyone should come forward to contribute in restoration of democracy. When the people of West Pakistan came to know of the mood of their brethren here, they would not be falling in standing on the same platform for the common goal of restoring democracy in the country, he said.

The Ford Foundation has announced 4000,000 grant to the International Rice Research Institute at Jaydebpur for continuing support of a long term rice research programme in East Pakistan, reports APP. This was one of several Ford grants announced for East Pakistan, says USIS press release.
The new grant for support of the East Pakistan Rice Research Institute brings to nearly one million dollars Foundation assistance since the Institute's founding in 1965.
Another grant 150,000 seeking to increase Food production went to the Economic Planning Research and Evaluation Division of the East Pakistan Department of Agriculture.
Pakistan will also benefit directly from an educational grant to the Indian University Foundation

The army troops are exercising at most restraint in the face of provocations by aggressive mobs who are creating impediments even in normal supply of food and other necessities of daily life of the troops, Martial Law authorities announced here last night, reports APP.
The troops have been ordered to exercise restraints so that the situation does not take an ugly turn.
However, if impediments continue to be created in the movement of supplies, the situation will be dealt with firmly. This follows reports from Sylhet that a convoy was stopped while it was proceeding to collect rations yesterday. The troop exercising utmost restraint did not force their way through. Similar reports of interference are being received from Jessore and other areas.

In a joint statement they demanded that the Government of Pakistan should facilitate homeward journey to those passengers intending to travel form Karachi to Dacca.
The SBCSP leaders also appealed to every patriotic citizen of Bangladesh to intend all cooperation to the volunteers engaged in the struggle for emancipation of the people of Bangladesh.
Giving directives of volunteers engaged in night duties, the student leaders said that during the night checking journalists, innocent people and those others bearing identity cards from the Sangram Parishad should be allowed to move without harassment.
The SBCSP leaders said that they came to know that in certain city areas people were subjected to pay money in the name Sangram Parishad. Anybody trying to collect money in this way should be challenged and reported immediately to Zahurul Haq Hall (Iqbal Hall).

No untoward incident was reported from any part. But the firing in Narayanganj on the prisoners escaping from the jail early in the morning created sore excitement in the city.
Black flags continued to fly atop private and public places, educational institutions and shops. Vehicles and rickshaws also flew black flags.

Shops and shopping centres were open for sometime, but the recreational centres were totally closed. Most of the shops in Nawabpur, Patuatuli and Baitul Mokarram were closed for most part of the day. The shops which had opened in the morning were closed before sunset.
The hotels and drug stores were open throughout the day. The hotels, particularly the bigger ones, did not charge any tax. The High Court and lower courts did not sit. Neither the Judges, Magistrates nor the subordinate staff turned up. The advocates also stayed out of the court premises.
The police force, in response to the directive came back to its normal duties and moved around the city to maintain law and order. The volunteers of Awami League helped the police force in discharge of their duties.

The railway traffic which resumed following exemption granted to them in the directives returned to normal.
All the educational institutions remained closed. Most of the students and teachers of these institutions have left for their homes. The university halls were almost empty.
