Plea to shift E. Pak refugees from W. Bengal

(APP)

New Delhi, May 11 (APP) /Reuter : Mr. Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee, West Bengal Chief Minister, said yesterday that refugees from East Pakistan should be dispersed to other Indian states to prevent deterioration of the situation in turbulent West Bengal.

The chief minister said that last week he had told Indian prime minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi that a densely populated  state like West Bengal would suffer from the additional congestion caused by the refugees.

He said the price of rice and other essential articles had already gone up and there were bound to be additional law and order problems.

Normalcy returning fast

It is little over a month that Army operations stated under compelling situation to clear miscreants and anti-state elements in East Pakistan, this has produced very encouraging results.

Reports of the return of normalcy have been pouring in the city from various districts. People who are returning to Dacca city from the interior describe that the situation is under control. Stories of improving situation in the interior are heard in "Bazar" and also in shops particularly in the old city, where the wholesale market has started almost full operation. This shows the return of full confidence in people as they can move about freely. Otherwise they would not have come for shopping in the wholesale markets.

The marketing centres in the interior where utter chaos was created by anti-state elements, have obviously been depleted of their stocks. The presence of big and small merchants in the city who come for shopping suggests that normal activities have been resumed in the interior also and they are busy in replenishing their stocks.

The creation of such a situation within a short time is the work of our army. They have not only saved the people of East Pakistan from Indian machinations to enslave them but also saved the country from disintegration which "Joy Bangla" slogan connoted. The action the government has taken to smash the anti-state elements was forced on it and events have also proved that it was a matter of great foresight on the part of president Yahya who took adequate measures to meet any emergency and to enforce law and order.

Indeed the great majority of the people who voted for the AL were dumb- founded when they found it raised the voice of independence of Bengal.
