Washington, May 12 (APP/ Reuter): The US will provide up to 2,500,000 dollars in food and other assistance as an initial American contribution to relief efforts for East Pakistanis who have reached the Indian side of the border, Senator Edward Kennedy said yesterday.
The Massachusetts Democrat told a congressional hearing on the East Pakistan situation that the State Department had advised him of this new aid authorisation.
The US is already providing emergency food aid for about 217,000 refugees in West Bengal, using the distribution facilities of the Care and the Combined Church World Service Luthern World Federation.
On the Indian side of the border, representatives of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees are handling relief needs at the request of the Indian Government and are developing a plan for international action.
The State Department, which confirmed that the US was providing relief for Pakistani refugees in West Bengal, said it would replenish the stocks.
Officials said the US effort was part of the international relief assistance that was being organised by the UN at India's request.

The attendance in the secondary schools in and around Dacca has been steadily improving day by day since the opening of the schools on May 8. The schools were opened with holding of Milad Mahfil.
The position of attendance in some of the schools in the city is near normal while in others including the Central Government High School for Boys in Motijheel, Dacca; had been gradually improving with the restoration of communication linking Dacca city with the rest of the province.
