Pak troops blunt major Indian offensive in Belonia. bulge.

Pakistan troops yesterday blunted a major Indian offensive was launched in a brigade strength supported by tanks and field guns, report APP.

The attacking force comprised two battalions of Indian regular troops and one battalion of Indian agents. One of the Indian battalions belonged to the Sikh Regiment.

The invaders were successfully checked by vigilant Pakistan troops. the enemy suffered 74 dead and nearly 130 wounded. Four Indian agents were captured alive.

It may be recalled that on Monday last, three companies of Indian soldiers and their agents had also tried to force their way into the bulge overrunning a routine patrol party but their attempt was foiled inflicting heavy casualties on them.

Yesterday's offensive was the most serious since India started shelling and attacking East Pakistan borders without any provocation.

The Indian field guns and mortars Tuesday night shelled Belonia, Satkhushia, Fulghazi, Purshuram and the neighbouring localities with over 1,000 shells. The shelling stopped at. 3.30 a.m. About an hour later, India launched, no less than a brigade in the area. This heavy force, which enjoyed the support of Indian guns and tanks, tried to ran its way through the Pakistan positions. Almost simultaneously the Indian guns and tanks continued pounding the area. But our soldiers, though largely out numbered, held fast to their positions and resisted the attack with full force. the attacking force was not allowed to make any headway.

Four more attempts.

Meanwhile, reports from other border areas that Indian troops and their agents yesterday made four attempts to intrude into Pakistan territory in Sylhet. Dinajpur and Rajshahi districts. Two attempts were made in Sylhet and one each in Dinajpur and Rajshahi.

A report from Sylhet said that Indian agents made two almost simultaneous attempts at Kamalpur and Atgram along north eastern border. They were over 300 and 250 strong at Kamalpur and Atgram respectively. In both these encounters. Indian agents suffered 28 dead. Other hurried back to their privileged sanctuaries across the border.

Similarly, a report from Rajshahi said that about 150. Indian agents tried to intrude into Pakistan territory at Darbarpur on the western border. Pakistan troops engaged them with small arms fire and killed 18 of them. Others ran across the border leaving behind 2 1 rifles with 2.060 rounds three stenguns with six magazines of ammunition, two mortars, 110 mines and two boxes of detonators.

Another report from Dinajpur said that Pakistan troops encountered the intruders near Mohanpur border area Tuesday night. They threw them back killing 25 of them.

Besides the attempts at intrusion. Indian soldiers continued firing artillery and mortar shells on border villages. They lobbed 1,750 shells of various calibres on 18 border villages. Of the shelled villages eight are located in comilla, two in Sylhet. five in Rangpur and one each in Dinajpur, Rajshahi and Jessore. Twentv-seven villagers were killed and nine more wounded. Among the victims of this want no shelling, are two women and seven children.

More time for withdrawal Election laws may be amended.

The existing election laws, it is learnt, are being amended enabling the candidates to withdraw their nomination papers seven days before the poling dale.

It is further learnt that an ordinance in this regard is expected to be issued soon.

According to the existing election laws a candidate can not withdraw his nomination papers after the withdrawal date is over and technically he remains in the field.

It the election laws are amended in this line it will provide opportunity to six party alliance as well as others two are now contesting by-elections to the National and Provincial Assembly in East Pakistan for further. adjustments and understanding.

In the by-elections to the 78 vacant scats to the National Assembly from East Pakistan so far 58 candidates have been provisionally declared elected uncontested. In the East Pakistan Assembly by-elections 116 candidates out of 190 so far had returned unopposed.

900 UN relief trucks may arrive in E. Wing soon.

Karachi, Nov. 10 (APP) : Mr. John Kelly, a representative of the United Nations I ugh Commissioner for refugees in Dacca, said here on Monday that 200 trucks to be used in the current displaced persons relief operations will start arriving in the phases in East Pakistan soon.

Talking to newsmen, he said that 300 out of a total of 1200 trucks were already in use in East Pakistan.

Mr. John Kelly who came here from Dacca to receive Prince Sadruddin. the United Nations High Commissioner for Relief, expressed his satisfaction with the relief operation in the context of the cooperation extended by the civil administration as well as the people.

Niazi visits Belonia, Feni.

Lt. Gen. A.A.K. Niazi, Commander. Eastern Command and Martial law Administrator, zone 'B', yesterday visited Feni, Belonia and Chittagong where lie met the officers and Jawans of the Pakistan Army, reports APP.

On arrival at Feni, he was received by the local Commander who briefed him on the situation along the border. He told the General that unprovoked Indian shelling on the border villages continued unabated resulting in daily casualties of men. women and children. He also apprised the General about the pressure being mounted on the borders by the Indian soldiers and their agents.

Gen. Niazi also met the troops and Razakars in Belonia bulge who are working hand in hand for the defence of their country.

Later, Gen. Niazi paid a brief visit to Chittagong.

India's wish to take advantage of crisis will not be fulfilled.

Lahore, Nov. 10 (APP.) : Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party. Mr. Z. A. Bhutto said here this evening Pakistan did not want war but if it was Thrust on her, it would not be confined to the armed forces along but each and every citizen of Pakistan would fight it out.

He was addressing a big crowed opposite Musjid-e-Shuhada on the Shahara-e-Quaid-e-Azam on the termination of the procession in which he was taken out from the railway station on his arrival from Rawalpindi.

He said undoubtedly Pakistan was passing Through on internal crisis which he hoped would be successfully resolved following transfer of power to the representatives of the people realy next year-. But Indian wish of taking advantage of the internal crisis of 'Pakistan would never be fulfilled. he asserted.

The war would not be confined to Indo-Pakistan borders either-, he added.

Referring to a threat of Indian Defence Minister that India would not withdraw her forces and restore Pakistani towns after occupation, Chairman of the People's Party said India could occupy any Pakistani town "over own dead bodies."

Earlier, PPI reported from Pindi : Mr. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Chairman of the Pakistan People's Party said in Pindi today that if India dared to commit the folly of attacking us they will be replied with full force and annihilated. he was addressing a sizeable crowd of the party's supporters before his departure for Lahore by Tezgam.

Those who had come to him a send off included People's Party MNA's and MPA's-elect including Mr. Hayat Mohd. Khan Sherpao. Chairman of the People's Party in the frontier Province.

No Bangladesh state exists, says soviet official.

New Delhi, Nov. 10. (Reuter) : A visiting Soviet Parliamentary official Mr. V. Kadrayasteev, said yesterday the world could not afford the crisis in the Indian sub­continent. the world still had the Vietnam. and Middle East crisis to settle, he added.

He called for an East Pakistan solution based on the National aspirations of its people.

Asked at a press club meeting here why the Soviet Union did not use the lei-III Bangladesh to describe the movement in East Pakistan he said it was because no such state existed.

Razakars foil bids to blow up bridges.

Razakars and Mujahids yesterday failed four attempts by Indian agents to blow up bridges in sylhet. Mymensingh and Khulna, according to the reports reaching Dacca, reports APP.

They also recovered a substantial quantity of arms, ammunition and explosives.

According to a report from Sylhet. Mujahids guarding a bridge near Baragata, were attacked by about 60 Indian agents. The Razakars fought back gallantly and saved the bridge killing six Indian agents. Others ran across the border they left behind five rifles, one mortar and 120 pounds of explosives.

Similarly, Razakars saved two bridges in Mymensingh district. One of them was a road bridge near Nagua and the other a rail bridge near Purba Dhalla. The attacking Indian agents were beaten back. Ten rifles and 210 pounds of explosives were recovered from them.

Another report from Khulna said that Razakars on duty foiled on attack by about 50 Indian agents on a bridge near Mobarihpur in Satkhira sub-division Razakars inflicted heavy casualties on them and recovered seven rifles with 600 rounds, one stengun and about 90 pounds 01 explosives.

War will be fought on Indian soil if forced on Pakistan : Abbas Ali.

Karachi, Nov. 10 (APP.) : Maulana Abbas Ali Khan Minister for Education. Government of East Pakistan, yesterday warned the Indian ruling clique that if they forced a war on Pakistan, the ensuing battles would be fought on the Indian soil.

He was addressing students of the Karachi University on the occasion of "Yaum­e-Badr" being observed by the Karachi University students Union in commemoration of the 1388th anniversary of the first Muslim victory.

Maulana Abbas said that India ever-since partition had been trying to bring about the destruction of Pakistan, but did not realise that the Pakistani Muslims would never permit the disintegration of their beloved country, which had come in existence only after untold sacrifices.

He said the Indian Army had taken up an aggressive posture on the East Pakistan border and was giving all-out Support to the secessionists but the Fast Pakistani people had been through the game and would not allow to succeed.

He emphasised that the over whelming majority of the East Pakistani people were true patriots and only a handful of secessionists and miscreants were trying to create trouble and disorders.

He said that aside from some stray incidents, the situation in East Pakistan was well under control.

lie said unity among all sections of -the Pakistani people was the need of the hour and the only guarantee for the successful defence of the motherland against foreign aggression.

Recalling the victory at the battlefield of Badr 1,388 years ago. he pointed out that the muslims numbering 313 in all, had inflicted a decisive defeation the forces of evil, even thought they faced on enemy three times larger than themselves.

He also noted that many other Muslim victories, such as those of- Jarmonk, Qadisya, Nehavand and the conquest of sind and Spain had been achieved in the lace of overwhelming adds . He said the lesson to be drawn from this. was. that provided the Muslims acted on their faith, drew inspiration from it and remained united no power could defeat them.

He regretted that regionalism and provincialism in the recent years had been on the increase in Pakistan.

He praised the young people who were joining the Razaker in a large numbers in East Pakistan, and thus fulfilling a useful national service. Mr. M. Munawar Hasan, General Secretary, Islamic research Council welcomed the chiefguest.

London, Nov. 10 : It 'the reception Mrs. Gandhi got in Brussels, Vienna, London. Washington is anything to be taken by shell have same disappointment in Paris where she reached on Sunday night and Bonn where she's reaching on Wednesday.

In disclosed that while trenches are being dug in Delhi and Calcutta area 60 miles round Delhi was successfully blacked out last week as Delhi is within easy striking distance of Pakistan bombers.

Among equipment which Russians are now supplying, Telegraph said, besides anti-tank missiles including "number of low level fighter bombers and longrange fighters. India manufactures MIG 21 fighters but these are short range. the Telegraph said.

Abbas Ali warns If E. Wing is detached from country, West Wing bound to disintegrate.

Karachi. Nov. 10 (APP.) : Maulana Abbas Ali Khan, the East Pakistan Minister for Education, yesterday warned that, if East Pakistan was detached from the rest of the country, West Pakistan also was bound to disintegrate into small pieces.

He was speaking Lit a reception given in his honour by the Karachi branch of the Jamaat-e-Islami at the Cosmopolitan Club Here last evening.

Maulana Abbas Ali said if' Pakistan Fell apart into small states, there should be no doubts in anybody's mind that India would slowly and steadily devour them 111) "slice by slice."

He said some people in the western wing were becoming frustrated about the East Pakistan crisis, but there was no need for this.

He emphasised that everyone should be aware of the fact that the vast majority of the East Pakistani Muslims did not want to secede from Pakistan.

"What does it matter if some people want secession since the overwhelming majority of the over six crore East Pakistani Muslims are firm in their resolve to keep the nation united," he asked.

He said Pakistan came into existence as a result of the demands voiced by the entire Muslim population of the Indo-Pak sub-continent and as such was not the private preserve of any one racial group but the nomeand for all the Muslims.

He regretted that the original purpose for the creation of Pakistan. namely establishment of 'Islamic system of Government, remained unfulfilled even after the passage of 24 years.

It was only because the Government and people had forgotten this goal that conditions in the country were so bad, he added.

"We are paying for our pretrayal of our solemn pledges to establish Islamic system of Government, he remarked.

Maulana Abbas emphasised that only a just socio-economic order, bassed on Quranic principles, could provide a solution for the present problem.

Pakistan not responsible for DPs staying out.

East Pakistan's Finance Minister. Mr. Abdul Quasem said here Tuesday that Pakistan could not be held responsible for those displaced Pakistanis in India who are unwilling to return or whom the Indians were preventing from returning, reports APP.

In a statement to APP, the Minister said Pakistan's President had urged the displaced persons to return and also assured them of their rehabilitation. The response of the DPs also encouraging he said and added that it was, however, not possible on the part of the Pakistan Government to get back everybody particularly those who are unwilling to return and who want to stay or settle in India or elsewhere.

The Minister pointed out that the migration from East Pakistan this time was unlike the migration the Indian Muslims in the fifties when about three million Muslims were pushed into East Pakistan from West Bengal as result of communal freenzy in those two provinces.

This time to migration from East Pakistan he said, was not due to any communal riot but because of fear of these people for the punishment by the Government of Pakistan for the crimes committed against tile nation.

Besides the Indians also openly encouraged them to migrate to India he added­

The Provincial Minister said it was extremely difficult on the part of Pakistan Government to accommodate the huge member of Indian Muslims who had been pushed into East Pakistan in 1950 and this compelled the then Prime Minister of Pakistan Quaid-e-Millat Liaquat Ali Khan to fly to Delhi to hold discussions with the then Indian Premier Jawaharlal Nehru. As a result an agreement was arrived al where in the Indians agreed to take back the Indian citizens for rehabilitation. But unfortunately these displaced persons did not find any shelter on return.

Ultimately they came to East Pakistan for settlement here, he added.

lie strongly critised India for holding out threats as a device of frocing a settlement of the East Pakistan issue of' their own choice. He remained the Indian ruling clique and the warmongers that they had forgotten the fact that Pakistan was an independent sovereign state enjoying equal international recognition as India.

Pakistan, therefore, could not submit to the demand of India for a political solution of their choice.

East Pakistan Situation Indira forced to admit she wants independence.

Paris, Nov. 10 (APP) : Cornered by French editors the Indian Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi admitted on Monday that she was for independence of  ­'Bangladesh'.

She said that release of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the condition for any settlement to the crisis and made it clear that India would not permit the return of refugees until his release.

Appearing before the panel of leading French editors on French television programme, Mrs. Gandhi was repeatedly questioned about her refusal to withdraw

troops from borders, training of "guerrillas" and supply of Indian arms to them and what she considered to be the final solution of East Pakistan crisis.

The tone of these critical questions was _vet by the chief of the television's Foreign Department, chaattard, who enumerated all the proposals accepted by President Yahya Khan and rejected by Mrs. Gandhi and asked her to comment.

The Indian Prime Minister said that the only solution of East Bengal was independence and that it would come "Sooner or later."

Replying to a question she said "yes. Independent Bangladesh is the only solution and that this independence would be inevitable."

When questioned why she was refused to meet President Yahya Khan, she said that she would be willing to meet him to discuss indo-Pakistan problems but that Bengal solution was for the people of Bangladesh to resolve.

Mood of Irritation.

This point, she was asked what about the outstanding Kashmir problem between India and Pakistan to which she replied in a mood of irritation. "1 want to ask you a counter question what is the problem of Kashmir?"

Reporting on Mrs. Gandhi's interview the Herald Tribune correspondent James Goldsbrough, said that on her European and American tours, Mrs. Gandhi avoided any direct public reference to independence for East Bengal but in her T.V. interview she directly referred to it.

To this, Herald Tribune added : Pakistanis maintain that Mujib tricked people by running on the platform of' autonomy. Then espousing separatism after his election and that the only motivation behind the present Indian policy is to bring the break up of Pakistan."

During the television interview, the editors repeatedly questioned Mrs. Gandhi about her reaction to the visit of' Pakistan delegation led by Mr. Bhutto to Peking and statement of' Chinese acting Foreign Minis pledging resolute support to Pakistan. She avoided direct answer to this question.

Arrives in Born.

AFT adds : Mrs. Indira Gandhi flew into Bonn today from Paris on the last stage of her current world tour.

Mrs. Gandhi was welcomed at the Bonn Cologne Airport by Maw podewils, Government chief of Protocol, immediately after landing she was taken by car to Euiskirchen, 16 miles from Bonn, for talks with chancellor Willy Brandt.

Govt. Step to restore Peace to be supported.

Maulana Muhammad Abdur Rahim, Deputy Amir of the Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, yesterday called on the East Pakistan Government, Dr. A. M. Malik.

The Jamaat leader, according to a party Press release, discussed with the Governor the law and order situation of the province and assured him that the patriotic people will support any step taken by the Government for restoration of peace and normalcy in East Pakistan and for safeguarding the integrity and solidarity of Pakistan.

Maulana Abdur Rahman, who according to the Press release, is on elected MNA from Pirojpur sub-division of Barisal district, also discussed with the Governor various problems faced by the people of Pirojpur.

The Governor gave a patient hearing and assured him that he will consider the problems sympathetically, the Press release addes.

Nation will successfully come out of present situation, says Amin.

Lyallpur. Nov. 10 (APP) : Mr. Nurul Amin, President of 'the PDP today said her that the nation with the determination and unity would come out of the present situation successfully.

The PUP chief who was addressing members of the District Bar Association lyallpur soon after his arrival here in a brief speech traced the events leading the present crisis due to rebellion of the defunct Awami league. Indian aggression an(] role of the armed forces and patriotic people to deal with the situation.

Mr. Amin said India had surrounded both the wings of' Pakistan by its armed forces and was sending infiltrators into East Pakistan.

This unfortunate situation, he said, had developed after the last elections when

the defunct Awami league won the elections, and its leaders indulged in acts of barbarism against their own brethren when the army moved to suppress this rebellion most of the defunct Awami league leaders and MNAs fled to India.

The veteran leader said that talking advantage of- the situation India was

sending them people back to East Pakistan to indulge in acts of sabotage alter importing them training to blowing up bridges, destroying vital installations and disturbing peace. With announcement of the programme for by-elections these saboteurs had become more active. The acts of sabotage were being done on the advise of- Indira which believed that after successful completion of by-elections her whole game of harming Pakistan would be flop.

However, he said there was no case for disappointment or despondency as the armed forces and the Razakars were squarety meeting the situation.

the PDP chief said the people of East Pakistan were as staunch believers o( one Pakistan and national ideology as their West Pakistani brethren. He said if the authorities had needed to his warning after elections such a crisis would not have developed. He was however, confident that Pakistan would surmount her difficulties because of the nation's immense faith in Islam and its unity. the country will remain as one as ever, he said.
