Professor Ghulam Azam, Amir of the East Pakistan Jamaat-
Addressing a press conference at the party office here today, he said the Muslims of the subcontinent had voluntarily and not under any coerion agreed to have a separate homeland for themselves. But, "Our leaders have betrayed that ideology with the result that socialistic and communstic tedencies gained ground, especially in the ten years of the dictatorial regime of former President Ayub Khan and led the people away from the ideology of Pakistan."
He said another reason, which had made the East Pakistan drift away from West Pakistan, was the 'crushing of democracy' and the use of force by the previous government. Had there been a democrally elected assembly during the last regime, the East Pakistanis would have found a forum to present, discuss and first for their right he added.
Equal Share
He said the East Pakistanis, politically felt that they were denied the change to
have equal share denied the administration of the country, and this complaint was
exploited by that element who did not believe in the ideology of Pakistan. The introduction
of joint electorate gave the political parties a secular look, due to the presence

Professor Azarn said Sheikh Mujibur Rahman might have intended secession but never openly cried for independence, although his six points might have paned the way for independence.
He said it was Maulana Bhasani, who openly demanded secession and toured the whole of East Pakistan to popularise the idea as was done by professor Muzaffar and Ataur Rahman Khan, seperately. These people created circumstances which made Sheikh Mujib a victim of the circumstances, he added.
He said Sheikh Mujib aimed at secession and was arrested, but those who openly launched the secessionist movement had not been apprehended. He said there people were organised accustomed to underground war fare and had the external backing, and at present the secessionist movement was being led by these leaders and not by the defunct Awami League leaders.
PREFERENCE
Prof. Azam said East Pakistanis would never prefer India over West Pakistan and never vote for secession.
Sheikh Mujib did not seek referendum was on maximum provincial autonomy. Those people who voted for the Awami League should not be branded as anti Pakistan because they never wanted to break away from West Pakistan, he added.
He said, if the people, leaders and intelligentsia of West Pakistan understood the case of East Pakistanis and made efforts to restore the ideology, East Pakistan with West Pakistan. Only democracy and not use of force would cemenit the bonds of brotherhood between the two wings, he observed.
He further said the authorities should win the confidence of the people in East Pakistan.
The citizens should feel confident and should know that they were trusted by the administration.
He also said that miscreants were still active there and to counter their activities, peace loving citizens should be armed for their own defence.
He agreed with a questioner's suggestion that the present crisis could be best resolved by political approach. But he would not say anything on the subject of transfer of power before the president's scheme to that effect was out.
However, he said the elected representatives in East Pakistan have been declared outlaws and asked how could there be transfer of power without "bringing into being' the National Assembly.
He said theoretically the National Assembly had not been dissolved but practically it does not exist.
In reply to another question he said at present it was not possible to hold fresh elections in East Pakistan. Asked about Maulana Bhasani he said he was not aware of the whereabouts of the National Awamo party chief.
However he said if Maulana Bhasani had been in India he would have directly spoken

He said in the past at the tome of a crisis Maulana Bhasani used to go get a boat and cruire in the rivers, and he might be doing the same this time also.
